The Indian Army recently debunked a digitally manipulated video circulating on social media that falsely attributed fabricated remarks regarding Chinese territorial control to Lt Gen Girish Kalia. The misleading content attempted to frame the officer as making a leaked admission about the loss of areas in Arunachal Pradesh and the denial of supplies to troops.

What happened

The attack utilized synthetic-generated information, specifically employing AI-enabled lip-syncing and voice cloning technology. These digital manipulations were overlaid onto authentic archival footage to create a convincing but entirely false narrative. The original video source was a press briefing delivered on October 27, 2023, by then-Major General Girish Kalia, who was serving as the General Officer Commanding of the 28 Infantry Division in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir.

In the authentic footage, the officer was discussing operational achievements, including the elimination of 27 terrorists and the recovery of narcotics and warlike stores. The deepfake version replaced the original audio and modified the visual presentation to falsely claim that China had taken control of Asaphila, Longjou, and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian Army’s fact-checking unit identified the video as a deliberate attempt to spread military disinformation and incite public panic. They clarified that the officer made no such statements regarding Arunachal Pradesh or supply shortages, and they urged the public to verify the authenticity of such media before sharing it.
