Following a college football game between Tennessee and South Carolina, two separate viral videos emerged depicting Tennessee linebacker Jeremiah Telander in physical altercations. While one video captured a genuine incident involving Telander, the second video, which appeared to show him attacking a fan with a pole, was identified as a deepfake.

What happened

After South Carolina defeated Tennessee, fans stormed the field at Brice-Williams Stadium. During the ensuing chaos, a video surfaced showing Tennessee linebacker Jeremiah Telander throwing a punch at South Carolina freshman defensive back Triston Lewis. In this legitimate footage, Telander was quickly restrained by a member of the coaching staff and an armed security officer before the situation escalated further.

Shortly after this incident, a second viral video circulated on social media that appeared to show a Tennessee player wearing jersey number 5 charging at a fan and striking them with a pole. Analysis of this footage revealed clear indicators of artificial intelligence generation. The pole featured in the video does not exist, and the player's movements exhibit significant abnormalities consistent with synthetic media. While the punch involving Telander was a real event that drew criticism, the more extreme video involving the pole was confirmed to be fake. It is expected that Telander will face internal disciplinary consequences for his actual behavior during the field storm.
