In October 2026, the fact-checking organization Rumor Scanner uncovered a massive impersonation campaign involving 484 fake social media accounts operating under the name of Barrister Zaima Rahman. These accounts have been systematically utilizing AI-generated content to deceive the public and facilitate fraudulent activities.

What happened

Rumor Scanner, a Bangladeshi organization dedicated to countering misinformation, identified the network of 484 accounts during a routine investigation into digital deception. The report confirms that these accounts are actively leveraging Zaima Rahman's identity to lend credibility to AI-generated media. By mimicking her persona, the operators of these accounts have been able to spread misleading content and engage in various fraudulent schemes.

This discovery is part of a broader trend of misinformation identified by the organization, which also reported 410 instances of misinformation targeting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and 491 instances involving the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government. The use of AI-generated content in this specific impersonation campaign highlights the growing challenge of verifying digital identities and content authenticity on social media platforms.
