The Indian Army’s official fact-checking handle recently issued a warning regarding a sophisticated deepfake video circulating on social media that falsely attributed fabricated statements to Lieutenant General Girish Kalia. The manipulated content aimed to spread military disinformation by suggesting a senior officer had admitted to Chinese territorial control in sensitive border regions.

What happened

The attack utilized AI-driven lip-syncing and voice cloning technology overlaid onto authentic archival footage to create a deceptive narrative. The fake video claimed that Lt Gen Kalia had made a leaked admission regarding Chinese control over Asaphila, Longjou, and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh, further alleging that Indian troops in the sector were being denied essential supplies.

Upon investigation, the Indian Army identified the source material as a legitimate press briefing from October 27, 2023, originally filmed in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. In the authentic footage, Kalia—then a Major General and GOC of the 28 Infantry Division—was discussing counter-terror operations along the Line of Control, specifically detailing the elimination of 27 terrorists and the foiling of 10 infiltration attempts. The original briefing contained no mention of China, territorial disputes in Arunachal Pradesh, or supply shortages. The Army characterized the incident as a calculated campaign of military disinformation, noting that the perpetrators combined old footage with synthetic audio and false attribution to incite public panic. Officials have urged the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of video clips against official sources before sharing content that appears designed to mislead the nation.
