Criminal networks across Colombia are increasingly exploiting AI voice cloning technology to execute sophisticated impersonation scams targeting families. By leveraging widely available software to mimic the tone, cadence, and emphasis of a known individual, scammers are creating realistic audio that bypasses human intuition and exploits emotional pressure during staged crises.
What happened
The deception relies on harvesting small samples of raw audio from public platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Criminals feed these clips into AI models to generate convincing vocal copies. The scam typically follows an established emotional script, claiming an emergency such as a kidnapping, medical crisis, or arrest to create an immediate sense of urgency. This pressure is designed to prevent victims from performing calm verification, often compelling them to send money via wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards while maintaining secrecy.
Experts note that human hearing is no longer a reliable defense against these tools, as synthetic speech can convincingly fool even those familiar with the target. In response to the prevalence of this fraud, Colombia enacted Law 2502 of 2025, which introduced an aggravating factor for identity fraud committed using artificial intelligence. To mitigate risk, authorities and security experts recommend that families establish private code words that cannot be guessed from social media, as well as maintaining strict verification protocols. If a suspicious, high-pressure call is received, the recommended course of action is to hang up and independently contact the purported caller through a trusted, known number. Furthermore, victims are encouraged to preserve evidence of these attempts to assist with legal enforcement, as the rise of synthetic media necessitates a shift from relying on auditory recognition to adopting robust verification and provenance-based security measures.
