Researchers at Graphika have uncovered a coordinated campaign involving a deepfake video of actor and rapper Jaden Smith used to promote fraudulent banking giveaways. The campaign utilized nearly 30 social media accounts to distribute the content, which aimed to deceive users into visiting a malicious website to steal their online banking credentials.

What happened

The attack featured a high-quality deepfake video in which Jaden Smith appears to speak Spanish while promoting giveaways associated with major American banks, including Chase and Wells Fargo. According to Tyler Williams, vice president of intelligence at Graphika, the audio and video quality were sufficiently convincing to mislead even native Spanish speakers.

To create the fabrication, the perpetrators did not require Smith's participation; instead, they leveraged existing footage of the celebrity available online to train the AI models. The primary objective of the campaign was to lure viewers to a third-party website where they would be prompted to enter their sensitive online banking login information. Graphika identified the activity as part of a broader trend where AI is used to manufacture deceptive content for financial gain. Experts emphasize that the ease of creating such content—using only publicly available source material—highlights the growing risk of AI-driven impersonation scams.
