A former Mexican government official and his associates were apprehended for orchestrating an extortion ring that leveraged artificial intelligence to impersonate public figures. The group targeted politicians, public servants, and businesspeople by mimicking the voices of high-ranking officials to facilitate fraudulent schemes.

What happened

Luis Miranda Contreras, the former Secretary of Administration and Finance for Michoacán, was identified as a key figure in the operation. According to investigations, the criminal ring utilized AI-driven voice cloning technology to impersonate officials and gain the trust of their targets. By obtaining confidential information, the perpetrators contacted victims with fabricated offers, including promises of political promotions, candidacies, and other professional benefits.

The operation was dismantled following an investigation that led to the arrest of five individuals in Metepec, State of Mexico. Those taken into custody included Miranda Contreras, his wife, two children, and a bodyguard. During the enforcement action, authorities seized various items used in the commission of the crimes, including cell phones, SIM cards, and high-end vehicles. All five detainees have been formally charged for their roles in the extortion scheme.
