A scam targeting pet owners in Reno has emerged, exploiting their desperation with AI-generated images. Scammers are using these images to falsely claim that missing pets have been found but require urgent and expensive veterinary care.

What happened

Tammy Rieken, a Reno resident, was contacted by scammers claiming her missing cat, Loulou, had been found. The scammers then sent her a graphic AI-generated image depicting Loulou with a severe injury, claiming she needed emergency surgery and demanding thousands of dollars for treatment. The scammers falsely claimed to be from a local animal hospital. An AI researcher analyzed the image and found it to be very realistic, noting the clever use of details like surgical hair nets to avoid rendering difficult features. Police are urging pet owners to independently verify any such claims directly with the veterinary hospital using a verified phone number and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
