A viral image of a sign demanding 20% tips at a Torchy's Tacos location in Houston ignited a debate about tipping. However, the image was confirmed to be AI-generated and not associated with the restaurant chain.
What happened
The image, which circulated on social media, depicted a sign with a message demanding that guests compensate servers appropriately, including a breakdown of how little servers supposedly earn after tips. The sign also included the phrase "If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to dine out." The image was shared on a local subreddit and a radio station's Facebook page, generating thousands of comments. Torchy's Tacos clarified that the image was AI-generated and that tipping is never mandated or required at their restaurants. Red flags included that similar images had been circulating online for weeks, the image did not resemble the actual restaurant location, and counter-service restaurants like Torchy's typically do not expect such high tips.
