In May 2026, following a corruption investigation into former Ugandan parliament speaker Anita Annet Among, social media users circulated a video purporting to show police seizing a luxury designer dress from her property. The video, which appeared on platforms including X, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, claimed the outfit was confiscated during a raid on May 16, 2026. However, the footage is entirely fabricated using artificial intelligence.

What happened

The corruption probe involving Among resulted in the seizure of seven luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, from properties in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda, and Bukedea district. An AFP correspondent present during the raids confirmed that only vehicles were impounded and that no clothing or personal items were taken by authorities.

The deceptive clip, which originated from a TikTok account explicitly labeled as AI-generated content, attempted to mimic the actual police raid by utilizing an image of a real police flatbed truck as a base. Despite this, the AI synthesis contained several visual anomalies that betrayed its artificial nature. The video featured an unnaturally glossy aesthetic, motionless bystanders with indistinct features, and a dress that appeared disproportionate to the vehicle. Furthermore, the AI-generated truck lacked key mechanical details present on the real vehicle, such as the correct rear loading ramp, proper tyre tread, the supporting metal frame behind the cab, and a license plate.

By layering these fabricated elements over a genuine reference image, the creators attempted to link Among to the seizure of a high-value garment she had previously worn to President Museveni's inauguration. The misinformation spread rapidly during a period of political volatility, coinciding with Among’s withdrawal from her candidacy for speaker of parliament following the loss of support from army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
