On June 16, 2026, a viral image surfaced on social media platforms including X and Instagram, falsely suggesting that the South Korean national football team had held a formal press conference to announce a media boycott. While the team had indeed engaged in a real-world media blackout following reports that journalists mocked captain Son Heung-min, the widely shared image documenting the announcement was entirely fabricated using artificial intelligence.

What happened

The controversy began after a local TV station shared footage from a June 8 training session that appeared to capture journalists mocking Son Heung-min's past military service. In response, the South Korean squad skipped interviews after their June 11 match against the Czech Republic. Seizing on this tension, bad actors distributed an AI-generated image showing the players standing before a Korea Football Association (KFA) backdrop, with Son holding a microphone. The post included a caption stating, "We have decided not to have any further contact with the press."

Analysis of the image revealed numerous technical anomalies indicating it was synthetic. The composition appeared to be a direct manipulation based on footage of the 2016 Argentinian national team announcing their own press boycott. Specific visual errors included the midfielder Hwang Hee-chan appearing twice with different hair colors and a tattoo appearing on Son's arm that does not exist in real-world photographs. Furthermore, the KFA logo displayed in the background was outdated. To confirm the origin, investigators utilized Google's SynthID tool, which identified the image as AI-generated with a "Very High" degree of confidence. The fabricated image was amplified by prominent social media accounts, including a sports commentator with millions of followers, before being debunked. The KFA eventually issued a statement calling for responsible media conduct, and the team has since resumed communications with the press.
