During the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between France and Senegal on June 16, 2026, an image circulated on X (formerly Twitter) showing a football spectator holding a protest placard. The image, shared by user @oluremitinubu, featured a supporter with a sign inscribed with the words “Colonialism Oppression. Africa Will Not Forget.”

What happened

The viral post suggested that the supporter was displaying the anti-colonialism message during the match held in New Jersey. However, investigations by FactCheckAfrica revealed the image to be entirely synthetic.

Several factors led to the discovery of the deception. First, FIFA’s anti-discrimination policy strictly prohibits materials of a political or offensive nature, making it highly unlikely that such a placard would pass security inspections at a stadium. Second, visual analysis of the image revealed clear technical inconsistencies: the hand holding the placard appeared physically disconnected from the supporter's arm and lacked realistic finger joints.

To confirm the nature of the content, researchers utilized open-source detection tools. The tool ImageWhisper identified the image as 99% AI-generated, noting that the text on the placard was unnaturally sharp and lacked the expected lighting gradients and grain of a real photograph. Additionally, the tool OpenAIVerify confirmed that the image was created using AI generation software. Despite being shared across multiple prominent social media accounts, no legitimate media coverage of the event captured such a spectator, and the image contained no camera metadata or historical web record.
