In October 2026, a fabricated image circulated on social media falsely depicting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi praying in a jail cell. The image appeared amidst political instability in Pakistan, following the federal government's imposition of emergency rule in the province.

What happened

The image, which showed a man cupping his hands in supplication on a prayer mat, was shared on Facebook on October 27, 2026, with an Urdu-language caption praising Afridi as a loyal companion to Imran Khan. The post emerged after Afridi and hundreds of supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party were arrested following anti-government demonstrations. While officials confirmed that Afridi had been placed in protective custody, no official photographs of him in detention were released.

Investigations revealed the image was an AI fabrication. A reverse image search linked the picture to a TikTok post that had been tagged as "AI-generated media." Further technical analysis using the SynthID Detector identified an invisible watermark embedded in the file, which the tool concluded was made or edited with OpenAI. Beyond the digital detection, visual inspection of the image revealed clear signs of synthetic generation, including deformed hands with merged fingers and facial features that did not accurately match Afridi's appearance. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of AI-generated misinformation being used to manipulate public perception during periods of political unrest.
