Following the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells on Horn Island, a surge of AI-generated content and deepfakes has emerged, creating confusion and spreading misinformation. Wells, a college football player, went missing on July 4, 2026, and his body was discovered on July 6, leading to a national investigation and calls for transparency from his family and legal counsel, Ben Crump.

What happened

The information vacuum surrounding the investigation has been filled by fabricated media that misrepresents the events of that weekend. AI-generated videos have been circulating online, with some clips falsely claiming to show water rescues or drowning incidents. Other videos feature manipulated voiceovers of Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, which make false allegations regarding a "conspiracy" and solicit funds for an unauthorized GoFundMe campaign.

Beyond synthetic media, social media users have been sharing footage from unrelated incidents, attempting to pass off clips of other individuals as Wells or his associates. One widely shared video shows an argument between two men, which some users incorrectly attributed to the victim, despite the individuals in the footage not matching the description of Wells or his friends. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has noted that these rumors and unchecked online reports are hindering their efforts to gather authentic evidence. Investigators are currently seeking original, unedited photos and video recordings from individuals who were present on Horn Island to clarify witness statements and resolve discrepancies in the case.
