In July 2026, a 16-second video falsely claiming to show soldiers firing on civilians during protests in Pakistan-administered Kashmir circulated across Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Despite the clip's inflammatory content, it was not linked to the actual demonstrations occurring ahead of the regional legislative assembly election.

What happened

The video, which featured an Urdu-language caption asserting that Kashmir would not bow to oppression, depicted armed soldiers and a tank engaging with a crowd. However, the footage contained clear visual anomalies characteristic of synthetic media, including human figures that appeared to merge while running and security personnel pointing rifles at their own colleagues in an unnatural manner.

Google's SynthID Detector tool officially flagged the footage, confirming it was generated using the company's AI models. The misinformation emerged during a period of significant tension, as the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) continued to lead protests demanding economic and governance reforms, despite the group being banned under anti-terrorism laws in June. While real, deadly clashes between police and protesters did occur in the region—notably in the city of Rawalakot—the viral video was entirely fabricated and misattributed to these genuine events.
