Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has issued a formal warning to its utility customers regarding a surge in sophisticated AI-generated scam communications. These fraudulent attempts are designed to deceive residents into divulging sensitive personal information through the promise of financial incentives.

What happened

The scam primarily utilizes AI-generated voice technology to contact customers with claims of energy compliance reviews. In a provided example of the scheme, the automated voice claims that the recipient is eligible for up to $4,000 in energy rebates and a free air-conditioner. To create a sense of urgency, the callers describe the outreach as a "last notice" for the customer to capitalize on these purported benefits.

During these interactions, the AI introduces itself by a first name and directs the victim to contact an "energy compliance team" via a specific provided phone number. While the primary vector for this fraud is voice calls, FPL reports that these scams also manifest as text messages and emails. The company is actively raising awareness as these AI-driven tactics grow increasingly convincing, urging customers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant against unsolicited requests for information.
