In July 2026, an AI-generated image and accompanying narrative depicting a beluga whale leaping from a research facility to reunite with its calf went viral on social media. The story, which claimed the whale escaped from the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, reached nearly 6 million views on a single Instagram post before being debunked.
What happened
The incident involved the circulation of a fabricated story paired with a synthetic image of a beluga whale. The Alaska SeaLife Center, which has operated for 25 years without any such incident, confirmed the story was entirely false and the imagery was likely AI-generated. The center's communications manager, Kaiti Grant, noted that the misinformation posed risks to the organization's reputation and donor relations. The fake narrative gained traction shortly after a dead whale was discovered on a cruise ship in the same region, suggesting the story was crafted to exploit trending keywords like "whale," "Seward," and "Alaska" for engagement.
While the center issued an official statement to clarify the facts, they continued to receive inquiries from the public. Experts, including Professor Yong Cao of the University of Alaska Anchorage, highlighted that social media accounts often profit from such engagement despite the potential harm to organizations. Some platforms eventually applied warning labels to the posts, and the account responsible for the primary viral post was later disabled for violating community guidelines. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges organizations face in managing their digital reputation against increasingly realistic AI-generated content and the responsibility of consumers to verify information through reliable sources.
