On September 11, 2026, an AI-manipulated image began circulating on Burmese social media, falsely claiming to depict a drone strike on a Myanmar military hangar. The image was shared alongside claims that a rebel group, the Shwe Bo Battalion No-24, had conducted an FPV drone attack on Russian-made Yak-130 fighter jets at the Tada-U air base near Mandalay International Airport.

What happened

The circulating graphic appeared to show a monitor displaying drone footage of a fighter jet inside a hangar with a large green field in the background. While the People's Defence Forces did claim responsibility for an actual drone attack on the airport on September 10, 2026, which led to temporary flight disruptions, the viral image was confirmed to be synthetic.

Verification efforts revealed several discrepancies between the AI-generated image and the actual site. Satellite imagery from Google Maps demonstrated that the geography and tree line behind the military hangar did not match the background shown in the fake photo. Furthermore, OpenAI’s image verification tool detected an invisible SynthID watermark, confirming the graphic was created using the company's AI models.

Additional analysis compared the fake image to genuine footage of the attack reported by Myanmar Now. The real video footage contained noticeable differences, including variations in the fighter jet's cockpit and the presence of a second aircraft in the background. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of distinguishing authentic combat documentation from AI-generated misinformation during the country's civil war.
