In mid-October 2025, a video circulated online purportedly showing an Indian Army Lieutenant General making controversial statements about India, Pakistan, and the Taliban. The video claimed the general said India paid the Taliban to fight against Pakistan.

What happened

The video was determined to be an AI-generated deepfake. The person in the video was misidentified; it actually depicted Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar. The audio contained AI-generated speech. Fact-checkers used AI detection tools that showed a high likelihood of AI involvement. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) also issued a clarification, labeling the video a "deepfake" and stating that it was digitally altered. In the original video, Lt. Gen. Katiyar discussed Operation Sindoor and other topics related to the Indian Army but made no mention of the Taliban or payments to them.
