The incident involved the distribution of AI-generated imagery and video across social media platforms, including one post on X that garnered over 1 million views. This post purportedly depicted German fans celebrating a penalty kick with an individual resembling Adolf Hitler among them. Further deceptive content included a video falsely claiming to show fans performing a Hitler salute. An analysis by the dpa fact-checking team confirmed the material was created using OpenAI tools.
Jan Weitzel, a fan from Alsfeld, Germany, reported the incident to law enforcement authorities in both Germany and the United States after realizing the extent of the content's reach. Weitzel noted that while he is not personally recognizable in the doctored image, his son is clearly identifiable. The family and their associates have since filed multiple reports, and Weitzel has engaged with the FBI regarding the matter. Investigators currently believe the perpetrator responsible for the creation and dissemination of the AI content is located in the United States. Despite the distress caused by the viral misinformation, Weitzel confirmed he intends to continue attending World Cup matches, including the upcoming fixture in Toronto.
