On November 1, 2026, thousands gathered in New Delhi to protest against the Indian election commission, but an image circulated online by opposition backers falsely depicted a significantly larger turnout. The viral photo, which claimed to show hundreds of thousands of attendees, was identified as AI-generated following an investigation into visual inconsistencies.

What happened

The incident involved a Hindi-language Facebook post that featured an image of a massive crowd at Ramlila Maidan, complete with opposition party flags and posters of leader Rahul Gandhi. Supporters of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc amplified the image on social media platforms including Facebook and X to bolster the perceived scale of the demonstration.

AFP investigators identified several visual anomalies in the image, such as illegible banner text, distorted portraits of political leaders, and figures merging into one another. These inconsistencies were confirmed when an OpenAI detection tool identified the image as having been generated using its AI tools. The stage depicted in the AI-generated image also did not match the actual stage present at the protest site as documented by AFP photographers. The protest itself was organized to demand the resignation of the election commission chief over controversial voter list revisions that critics allege disproportionately affect minorities and favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
