A viral video circulating on social media falsely claimed that former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India's Western Command, Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, issued a warning regarding Arunachal Pradesh. The manipulated footage alleged that the retired officer stated the region could become a major military flashpoint due to increased India-China tensions and alleged territorial incursions. The Indian Army has officially confirmed that the video is digitally manipulated and that the officer made no such remarks.

What happened

The disinformation campaign utilized a genuine video clip of Lieutenant General Katiyar from his retirement media interaction on 30 March 2026 in Panchkula, Haryana. In the original footage, the General discussed his forty-year career, the success of 'Operation Sindoor' against Pakistan, disaster relief efforts during 'Operation Rahat,' and ongoing modernization initiatives within the Western Command.

Bad actors replaced the original audio with AI-generated speech to fabricate a false security narrative. Technical analysis confirmed the manipulation: the Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector flagged the audio as AI-generated, and Hive Moderation identified the speech as 99.4 percent likely to be synthetic. The Indian Army's fact-checking unit identified the content as a combination of genuine military footage paired with fabricated remarks, noting that the disinformation was being propagated by accounts linked to Pakistani propaganda. The incident highlights the risks of using synthetic media to distort the words of public officials to incite alarm regarding national security.
