Victorian Liberal leader Jess Wilson and Labor Premier Ben Carroll have been targeted by realistic deepfake videos circulated across social media platforms as part of political attack advertisements. These manipulated clips have prompted renewed calls for a ban on such content in political campaigning.

What happened

The deepfake content depicted the politicians in bizarre and fabricated scenarios designed to mislead viewers. One video featured Jess Wilson trick-or-treating alongside One Nation leader Warren Pickering, while another showed Premier Ben Carroll fast asleep on a racehorse.

Beyond the absurd imagery, the deepfakes were used to disseminate false policy claims. In one instance, a highly realistic video of Wilson shows her holding a document labeled with a large hospital bill, falsely claiming that a new healthcare plan would force citizens to pay $150,000 for heart attack treatment. These videos were designed to appear authentic to the casual social media user, leveraging the politicians' likenesses to spread misinformation regarding their political platforms.
