A Coinbase AI-powered scam-prevention chat agent demonstrated high efficacy in protecting users from a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam featuring a deepfake of Elon Musk. The incident highlights the growing role of automated defensive agents in mitigating synthetic media threats on public platforms.

What happened

The attack centered on a YouTube livestream that falsely claimed to feature a Tesla flying-car demonstration. During the broadcast, a synthetic version of Elon Musk appeared to promote a cryptocurrency giveaway. The stream displayed a QR code, instructing viewers to send cryptocurrency with the promise of receiving a larger amount in return.

Before the intervention, the livestream reached an audience of more than 500,000 viewers. Coinbase specialists Viktor Bunin and Will Megson reported that the company's AI chat agent was 99% effective at preventing users from engaging with the fraudulent offer. While the stream had a significant reach, the 99% effectiveness figure specifically measures the agent's success in stopping user interaction with the scam, rather than the total number of viewers who may have been exposed to the content.
