Greek citizens voice deepfake — Jul 2026

In July 2026, Greek police dismantled a sophisticated criminal organization that leveraged AI voice-cloning technology to execute widespread telephone scams targeting citizens. The gang, which operated with defined roles including management, callers, and collectors, is estimated to have defrauded victims of more than 1 million euros.

What happened

The scammers initially contacted victims posing as employees from utilities, telecommunications companies, or service providers, often citing technical procedures like fibre-optic installations. When victims displayed hesitation, the perpetrators requested the contact information of a trusted relative or friend. Under the guise of a service provider, the callers contacted the trusted individual to record a brief sample of their voice.

Using AI tools, the gang generated a clone of the recorded voice. They then re-contacted the original victim, playing the synthesized audio to impersonate the trusted person. This technique was designed to validate the scammer’s false claims and overcome the victim's skepticism. The operation was uncovered after police in Nea Ionia, Attica, arrested two "collectors" who were caught removing 30,000 euros worth of valuables from a home. The investigation linked the group to at least five additional incidents and the use of a stolen vehicle for operations. The Hellenic Police have since issued warnings, emphasizing that a familiar voice on the telephone is no longer a guarantee of identity and urging citizens to verify any requests by calling known numbers directly.
