Greek citizens voice deepfake — Sep 2026

A criminal organization in Greece has been dismantled by the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime after using AI voice-cloning technology to facilitate a sophisticated telephone fraud scheme. The gang, which operated with defined roles including management, callers, and collectors, is estimated to have stolen over 1 million euros from victims since at least early July 2026. Two suspects, aged 23 and 25, were arrested in Attica while attempting to remove 30,000 euros in valuables from a residence.

What happened

The scammers employed a multi-stage social engineering process to deceive their targets. Initially, callers contacted victims posing as employees from utility companies, telecommunications providers, or fibre-optic services to discuss technical procedures. If a victim expressed skepticism, the perpetrators requested the contact information of a trusted relative or friend, claiming it was necessary to verify the procedure.

Once the scammers obtained the contact details, they called the relative under the guise of a service provider to record a brief sample of their voice. Using AI tools, the gang created a synthetic clone of that voice. They then re-contacted the original victim, playing the cloned audio to simulate a conversation with the trusted relative. This technique was designed to dispel doubts and provide false confirmation of the scammer's claims. The organization's activities were linked to at least five additional incidents and the use of a stolen vehicle for operations. In response, the Hellenic Police have issued warnings, advising citizens that a familiar voice is no longer a reliable indicator of identity and recommending the use of pre-agreed safety phrases to verify callers.
