Cyber criminals in Nagpur successfully defrauded a local resident by leveraging AI-generated voice cloning and a photograph of the Police Commissioner to orchestrate a high-stakes impersonation scam. The victim, identified as the father of Nikhil Nakhat, was coerced into transferring Rs 50 lakh after being convinced that the official was in distress.
What happened
The perpetrators initiated contact with the victim by posing as the Police Commissioner. To establish credibility and bypass the victim's skepticism, the attackers utilized a photograph of the official alongside an AI-generated voice clone that mimicked his speech patterns. By claiming that the Commissioner was facing significant trouble, the fraudsters created a sense of urgency that compelled the victim to comply with their financial demands. The victim ultimately transferred Rs 50 lakh to the criminals. Following an investigation into the incident, the Cyber Police tracked the operation and arrested Netram Shriram Chadar, a 29-year-old resident of Indore, seizing two mobile phones as part of the evidence.
