An aspiring actor from Bansdroni was defrauded of approximately Rs 2.1 lakh after falling victim to a sophisticated casting call scam that utilized AI-generated voice cloning and forged documentation. The incident highlights the growing risk of digital impersonation in the entertainment industry, where scammers leverage the reputations of high-profile figures to exploit hopeful talent.

What happened

The scam began when the victim responded to a casting call advertisement posted on social media, which claimed to be from a high-profile film producer seeking fresh talent for upcoming feature projects. After submitting photographs, the victim was instructed to contact a phone number allegedly belonging to a famous Bengali film director.

Upon calling the number, the victim spoke with an individual whose voice was identical to the filmmaker, thanks to the use of AI voice cloning technology. Over a series of WhatsApp calls, the impersonator offered the victim a role in a big-budget historical period film. To solidify the deception, the scammers provided forged agreement copies, fake contracts, and stamped documentation featuring fraudulent credentials from a leading production house.

Under the guise of mandatory administrative procedures, the fraudsters extorted funds from the victim in three separate installments: an initial enrollment fee of Rs 30,000, a payment of Rs 92,000 for a specialized profile shoot, and a final demand of Rs 85,000 to finalize the agreement. The victim transferred a total of Rs 2,07,000 before communication abruptly ceased following the final payment. Realizing he had been targeted by a digital scam, the victim filed a formal complaint with the local police, providing transaction records, the phone numbers used by the scammers, and the forged documents as evidence.
