In July 2026, a wave of invitations to a new invite-only dating app called Goose began circulating on Instagram through accounts featuring impossibly handsome strangers. While many initially viewed the outreach as a clever marketing strategy, an investigation by WIRED uncovered a suspicious, coordinated network of accounts driving the campaign.

What happened

The investigation focused on several Instagram accounts—including those under the names Miles Sumrall, Daniel Mulugeta, Alistair Crombbie, and Luca Lepkowski—that appeared to be promoting the app. These accounts shared several distinct characteristics: they were created within a narrow timeframe, maintained a low post volume, followed an unusually high number of users, and interacted with each other using identical emoji patterns. Furthermore, these accounts sent near-identical direct messages inviting prospective users to join the Goose platform.

To verify the authenticity of the profiles, WIRED utilized AI detection tools on the accounts' profile images. The analysis indicated that multiple photos were highly likely to have been generated by artificial intelligence. Specifically, Google’s SynthID tool identified that most or all of the tested profile pictures had been created using Google AI. While the findings do not definitively confirm whether the campaign was operated directly by the Goose app developers, the evidence suggests a highly coordinated effort to manufacture organic community interest through synthetic personas. The discovery shifted the conversation from the app's potential utility to questions regarding the legitimacy of its growth tactics.
