A generative AI-based voice conversation application has been launched to allow dementia patients to talk with a family member's voice. The stated aim is to reduce anxiety in patients with early-stage dementia, and to ease the caregiving burden and stress on their families.

What happened

The application, named A.I.ways Call, was developed based on the tendency of patients with early-stage dementia to repeatedly ask caregivers the same questions or make repeated calls. The AI learns the caregiver's voice and conversation patterns and continues the call with the patient, reproducing the family's own terms of address, tone, and conversation topics. The system informs the patient that it is an AI program, before beginning the conversation. A research team found that expressions of anxiety and distress among dementia patients fell by about 70% after using the program. Family members also reported a reduced psychological burden caused by repeated calls.
