The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) posted an AI-generated image to their Facebook page. The image, intended to inform the public about hunting season rules, was quickly identified as artificial due to visual anomalies.

What happened

DEEP used Canva AI to generate the image, which depicted a hunter. Social media users noticed several issues, including an extra finger, a missing arrow, gibberish text on clothing, and a safety vest on the hunted game. DEEP removed the post and replaced it with a different image, stating they did not apply their usual level of scrutiny. They also stated that future uses of AI in image creation would be disclosed. The agency noted that while Connecticut agencies are required to follow an AI Responsible Use Framework, it lacks specific guidance on AI-generated images. The AI tool used was not included in the state's annual inventory of AI tools.
