The fraudulent activity specifically targeted vendors within a Nebraska craft fairs group, attempting to solicit money, sensitive banking information, and gift cards.

What happened

Fraudsters created a deceptive Facebook post that impersonated the City of Gretna, falsely claiming to manage vendor registrations for a holiday market. When interested vendors expressed interest in the comments section, the scammers initiated direct messages to solicit payments and personal financial data. According to Deputy City Administrator Tori Schuetz, at least one or two individuals have already fallen victim to the scheme.

AI expert and computer science professor Victor Winter noted that smaller communities are increasingly targeted by these campaigns. Vulnerabilities in local tech infrastructure and the relative ease of obtaining public records allow scammers to craft highly convincing impersonations. Winter emphasized that AI technology is advancing rapidly, noting that the majority of social media content may now be AI-generated.

To combat this threat, city officials have reminded the public that the City of Gretna will never request payments over the phone or via gift cards.
