Several Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers refuted rumors that they were summoned by regulators regarding battery capacity locking, blaming AI-generated lists for the misinformation. The controversy arose after a state media report about potential investigations into the practice of automakers limiting battery capacity via over-the-air (OTA) updates.
What happened
Following a report that regulators summoned eight automakers and launched investigations into three for OTA "battery locking," lists of supposedly involved companies circulated on social media. These lists, allegedly generated by AI, named BYD, Xpeng, Tesla, and GAC Aion as having been summoned or investigated. The EV makers issued statements denying the claims, asserting that the information was false and damaging to their brand reputations. They stated they would pursue legal action against those responsible for spreading the rumors. Other companies mentioned in local media reports, including Nio, Li Auto, and Aito, also denied the allegations.
