On August 3, 2026, social media users began circulating claims that the Australian home goods retailer Bunnings had replaced its iconic charity sausage sizzle with Indian cuisine. The false narrative, which fueled anti-migrant rhetoric, suggested that the retailer had abandoned a core cultural tradition in favor of diversity initiatives.
What happened
The viral claim originated from an X post that featured an image of men standing at a food stall under a Bunnings canopy, displaying a menu of Indian dishes. The post, which was shared over 280 times, lamented the perceived erasure of Australian culture. Similar content spread across Facebook, with users calling for boycotts of the chain.
Bunnings explicitly denied the claims, confirming to AFP in an email on August 4 that they had made no changes to their weekly sausage sizzle, which remains a staple for grassroots community fundraising. Technical analysis of the image revealed clear signs of artificial generation, including visual artifacts such as melted sauce bottles and distorted, gnarled fingers on one of the subjects. Furthermore, running the image through an OpenAI detection platform identified a SynthID watermark, confirming the content was created using OpenAI tools. The incident occurred amidst a backdrop of rising anti-immigration sentiment in Australia, highlighting how AI-generated disinformation can be weaponized to exploit existing social tensions.
