Meta’s independent oversight board has ordered the company to remove a deepfake video depicting a British politician making false, inflammatory comments about refugees. This ruling marks the first time the board has mandated the removal of a deepfake under its hateful conduct policies, overturning a previous decision by Facebook to leave the content online.
What happened
The AI-generated video, which remained on the platform long enough to garner 5,000 views and over 50 comments, was flagged for its deceptive and inflammatory nature. The oversight board, which is funded by Meta but operates independently, criticized the company's existing safeguards against deepfakes as fundamentally inadequate.
In its ruling, the board recommended nine policy changes to improve how Meta handles AI-generated content. These suggestions include requiring algorithms to demote content labeled as high risk to reduce its visibility in user feeds, and implementing warning screens that require users to click through before viewing certain AI-generated material. While previous board rulings on AI-generated videos primarily concerned sexual imagery, this decision signals a broader shift toward addressing political misinformation and hate speech. Meta has stated that it welcomes the board's decision and will comply with the removal order within seven days.
