In August 2026, an AI-generated reggae track titled 'We Will Dance Again' was removed from the music platform Bandcamp, resulting in the deactivation of Boy George's account. The song, which supported Israel's military actions in Gaza, had previously sparked controversy and professional repercussions for the artist.
What happened
The track, produced using generative AI, featured lyrics defending Israel's military actions and rejecting accusations of genocide in relation to the October 7 attacks. Following the initial release of the song, Boy George was removed from his role as King Herod in the London Palladium production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar.' Additionally, he fired his label manager, Tony Pontius, after Pontius refused to release the track.
After being posted on X, the song was uploaded to Bandcamp over the weekend. Andrew Frelon, a spokesperson for the AI band Velvet Sundown, claimed he reported the account to Bandcamp, alleging the platform confirmed the track violated its terms of use. Bandcamp maintains a strict policy against generative AI music. Following the removal, Boy George posted a video on Instagram confirming his profile had been deactivated and encouraged supporters to share the song online. The track has faced significant public backlash, including condemnation from musicians Martyn Ware and actor Patrick Clanton.
