What happened
On January 4, 2024, WOTC released an image on social media to promote new additions to the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The image, which depicted a steampunk workshop, contained visual artifacts such as morphing objects and repeating patterns that players identified as hallmarks of generative AI. Initially, the company denied the use of AI, stating that the art was created by humans. This claim was met with widespread skepticism from fans and artists, leading long-time contributor Dave Rapoza to sever ties with the publisher in protest.
On January 7, WOTC backtracked on its initial statement. The company admitted that AI components had been utilized, attributing the error to an external vendor who had used AI tools without the publisher’s knowledge. WOTC clarified that while its internal policy explicitly bans contributors from using AI, these tools had "crept into" the marketing creative through industry-standard software like Photoshop.
