The synthpop track "Rubberz," released by LA rapper Fenix Flexin, has been identified as the first fully AI-generated song to reach the Billboard Hot 100. Despite initial denials from the artist and producer Purps On The Beat, the song reached #58 on the charts while mounting evidence pointed to the use of artificial intelligence in its creation.

What happened

Controversy began when listeners questioned the authenticity of the song, which features faux-Morrissey vocals. Producer Medasin later published a detailed breakdown alleging that "Rubberz" was created using a program called Treblo, formerly known as Sonauto AI. Medasin demonstrated that the software could replicate the vocal style and recycle lyrical motifs found in the track, and noted that an early audio snippet contained the filename "Sonauto." When Fenix attempted to defend the song by producing audio stems, Medasin countered by showing how easily stem separators can be used to fabricate evidence from pre-existing tracks. Fenix eventually deleted his video containing the stems.

The situation reached a conclusion when Treblo released a detection tool that identified the "Rubberz" MP3 as "Very likely Treblo" with a claimed false positive rate below 1 in 10,000. Additionally, Treblo co-founder Ryan Tremblay indicated in comments that someone had used their model to create the sound. This revelation has fueled ongoing industry debates regarding the ethics of fully generating songs with AI and presenting them as human-made, especially as major labels work to establish new frameworks for chart eligibility regarding AI-generated music.
