On December 7, 2024, President Donald Trump utilized artificial intelligence to share provocative content on Truth Social amid escalating trade disputes and political friction with Canada. The digital media showcased the president engaging in fabricated scenarios regarding the renaming of a major landmark and the deployment of armed, stylized wildlife.

What happened

The incident involved two distinct AI-generated videos shared by the president. In the first clip, a digital representation of Trump approaches a "Welcome to Lake Ontario" sign, kicks it over, and replaces it with a "Welcome to Lake America" sign adorned with an American flag. Following this, the figure performs a signature fist-pumping dance to the Village People's song "YMCA." This video was released alongside an executive order instructing the Interior Department to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America on official U.S. government documents and maps.

A second AI-generated video featured an army of Canada geese, edited to sport the president's signature blonde hair and human arms carrying machine guns. Set to the "Hawaii Five-O" theme song, the geese march toward the newly named "Lake America" before firing their weapons. The president captioned this clip as "Donald Ducks."

These posts occurred against a backdrop of deteriorating trade relations, characterized by the imposition of 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and subsequent retaliatory measures from Canada. Trump has previously suggested that Canada should be absorbed as a 51st U.S. state and has publicly criticized the nation regarding defense spending and trade agreements.
