On September 14, 2026, Zoho Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu issued a security advisory to the public, urging families to adopt pre-agreed verbal passwords as a defense against increasingly sophisticated AI voice scams. This guidance followed a report from an X user who was targeted by a caller using an AI-generated voice to mimic their wife in an attempt to solicit credit card details.

What happened

The incident involved a social engineering attempt where an attacker used synthetic audio technology to impersonate a family member. By mimicking the specific vocal characteristics of the victim's wife, the perpetrator sought to gain unauthorized access to sensitive financial information. Following the report, Vembu highlighted the growing challenge of identifying fraudulent communications, noting that modern AI-generated voices have become so convincing that they are nearly impossible to distinguish from genuine human speech. To mitigate the risk of such identity deception, Vembu recommends that families establish secret verbal passwords to verify the authenticity of individuals during phone calls.
