In June 2024, a video claiming to show victims buried alive in a mass grave in Sudan circulated on social media, falsely attributing the atrocity to the United Arab Emirates. The misleading content used synthetic media to manipulate public perception regarding the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

What happened

The viral video, shared in an Urdu-language Facebook post on June 23, 2024, purported to show human arms protruding from the ground, accompanied by a caption accusing the UAE of funding the massacre. However, investigations revealed the footage was not filmed in Sudan and displayed clear indicators of artificial generation.

Reverse image searches traced the original clip to a Facebook group titled "Crazed AI," which is dedicated to hosting AI-generated content. Forensic analysis using the InVID-WeVerify plugin assigned the video a 99 percent likelihood of being AI-generated. Visual inspection further confirmed the fabrication; all the hands shown in the clip were identical in shape, size, and skin tone, lacking the natural variation expected in genuine human limbs.

While international organizations including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have documented reports of war crimes and violence in the region, including allegations of people being buried alive, this specific video was a synthetic fabrication. The UAE has previously denied accusations of providing support to parties involved in the Sudan conflict, stating that it does not permit its territory to be used for the financing or transit of foreign fighters. The incident highlights the growing challenge of synthetic media being leveraged to misinform the public about humanitarian crises and geopolitical conflicts.
