In June 2024, the newly opened San Francisco café Grind & Unwind became the center of a local controversy after using AI-generated images to market their menu items in their storefront window. The decision to use synthetic placeholders in place of actual food photography led to immediate public mockery and physical damage to the business.

What happened

Owners AJ and Lyndsey Lozano opened the café in May 2024 within a former Citrus Club space. Faced with a fast turnaround and a lack of proper signage, the couple used AI-generated images as temporary marketing placeholders while finalizing their setup. On June 30, a Reddit post titled "Yum, slop" highlighted the images, garnering over 670 upvotes and drawing disparaging comparisons to loofahs and biological matter. The backlash intensified on July 2 when the café's awning was vandalized with graffiti, resulting in cleanup costs exceeding $700. By July 6, the owners removed the AI images and replaced them with LED lighting and a display of actual baked goods. The incident serves as a cautionary tale for small businesses regarding the use of synthetic media to represent physical products, highlighting that while the public may be indifferent to AI in back-end operations, they react strongly when digital fabrications misrepresent a business's identity or craft.
