On June 16, 2026, authorities re-arrested 43-year-old Joel Lyons Jr. of Chauvin, Louisiana, after uncovering evidence of his involvement in the production and distribution of AI-generated child sexual abuse material. This development follows an initial arrest in April 2026 and highlights the expanding scope of an investigation led by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office.

What happened

The investigation originated from cyber tips sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the distribution of illegal material over social media. Following Lyons’ initial arrest on April 28 in Galliano, agents with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation continued to examine evidence, ultimately discovering that Lyons was actively producing and distributing unlawful AI-generated images depicting child sexual abuse.

As a result, a second arrest warrant was obtained. Lyons currently faces 17 counts of Unlawful Deepfakes (Production), 5 counts of Unlawful Deepfakes (Distribution), and 5 counts of Child Sexual Abuse Material involving children under the age of 13. These charges supplement his previous counts, which include 20 counts of Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material involving children under 13 and 14 counts of Sexual Abuse of an Animal. The case, which remains ongoing, was handled by the Orleans Metro Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, with support from the Terrebonne Parish and Shelby County Sheriff’s Offices. Lyons is currently held at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on a $75,000 bond.
