On October 25, 2026, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted an AI-generated image to his official Instagram account depicting a massive nuclear mushroom cloud over a city that appeared to be Tel Aviv. The post, shared just two days before Israel's October 27 election, was intended to highlight the existential threat posed by Iran but instead triggered immediate condemnation from political opponents.

What happened

The image featured a large explosion engulfing buildings in a densely populated urban area. Accompanying the visual, Netanyahu warned that Israel faced an existential danger from Iran and its proxies, arguing that the country's security depended on the outcome of the upcoming election. He urged the public to set aside political disputes to focus on the threat from Iran.

Opposition leaders quickly criticized the post as a calculated attempt to manipulate voters through fear. Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats, publicly called for Netanyahu to be restricted from social media, stating that the Prime Minister had lost control. Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of Yashar, similarly condemned the post, labeling it a familiar election tactic of using lies and fearmongering to influence the electorate. Both leaders accused Netanyahu of failing to achieve the objectives of the war against Iran and suggested that the public would respond to the tactic at the ballot box.
