In October 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu utilized an AI-generated image depicting a nuclear explosion in Tel Aviv as part of a political campaign strategy. The post, shared on X just two days before the parliamentary election, was intended to emphasize the existential threat posed by Iran's potential acquisition of nuclear weapons.
What happened
Netanyahu shared a warning originally authored by political commentator Yuval Bloomberg, which argued that electing a leader incapable of confronting Iran could expose Israeli citizens to the danger of a second Holocaust. The post featured an AI-generated graphic showing a nuclear blast over Tel Aviv to illustrate the potential consequences of the Iranian nuclear threat. Netanyahu framed the image as a reality check, suggesting that domestic political controversies were merely a smokescreen designed to distract from the primary security challenge facing the nation. He further argued that Israel possessed a limited window of opportunity to address this threat while US President Donald Trump remained in office.
The use of the AI-generated imagery drew sharp criticism from political opponents. Gadi Eisenkot, chairman of Yashar, accused the Prime Minister of hysterical fearmongering and utilizing scare tactics to influence the upcoming election. Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats, publicly criticized the post, stating that the Prime Minister had lost his composure and suggesting he should be kept away from social media. Critics also alleged that the focus on the Iranian threat was a strategic attempt to delay or influence the October 27 vote, a charge that Netanyahu denied.
