MP Sureena Brackenridge addressed public concern after a social media post featuring a fictional nurse, "Maya," was identified as AI-generated. The post, intended to highlight housing struggles, appeared on the Wolverhampton North East Labour MP's feeds in September 2024 before being flagged by the charity Full Fact.
What happened
The incident involved a staff member posting an AI-generated image and narrative about a fictional nurse struggling to find affordable housing. Following the identification of the content as AI-generated, the post was removed from X and edited on Facebook to clarify that the character was fictional. Brackenridge stated that the intent was to communicate policy in an accessible manner, but acknowledged it should have been explicitly stated that the image and narrative were illustrative rather than representative of a real individual. She noted that the error was made by a member of her staff and that she amended the post as soon as the issue was brought to her attention. To prevent similar social media errors in the future, Brackenridge confirmed that office procedures have been updated. Councillor Simon Bennett criticized the incident, emphasizing the necessity for honesty and transparency from elected officials regarding the use of fictional characters and AI-generated imagery to make political arguments.
