In late October 2026, viral social media content falsely depicted North Korean military forces massing closer to the South Korean border than they actually were. These doctored images and videos presented a misleading picture of the military situation during a period of heightened regional tensions.

What happened

The incident involved the manipulation of real footage to exaggerate the proximity and behavior of North Korean military assets. Analysis revealed that the deceptive content was derived from authentic footage of 122mm self-propelled guns deployed in Kaepung County, located approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) across the Han River.

Attackers modified this genuine footage to make the DPRK troops appear more menacing and closer to the South Korean side than the actual deployment. One widely shared photo on x.com appeared to incorporate a Yonhap photo from October 25, 2026, while integrating likely AI-generated elements, such as an interior view of a Starbucks, to create a false sense of location and scale. By blending real-world military imagery with synthetic modifications, the campaign successfully misled viewers regarding the immediate military threat.
