Following the death of 32-year-old Salanda Thermitus on August 12, 2024, a fabricated image circulated on social media, misrepresenting the events surrounding her final journey to the hospital. While the tragedy highlighted genuine concerns regarding Haiti’s rural health care infrastructure, the AI-generated content introduced false narratives that diverted attention from the actual circumstances of her passing.
What happened
Salanda Thermitus, who was approximately three months pregnant, died while being transported from the Life Medical Clinic in Môle-Saint-Nicolas to Béraca Hospital. Family members and the ambulance driver, Dieubon Salomon, confirmed that the vehicle experienced a flat tire, which caused a brief stop of less than an hour for repairs. After the repair, the driver continued toward the hospital, stopping only when the victim’s sister requested a welfare check, at which point they discovered Thermitus had passed away from an illness unrelated to her pregnancy. No medical professional accompanied her during the transport.
In contrast to these accounts, an AI-generated image shared on social media depicted a heavily pregnant woman sitting on a roadside rock, surrounded by men attempting to dig an ambulance out of deep mud. This fabricated scene suggested that the death was caused by labor complications and road conditions that prevented the vehicle from moving. The image created a compelling, albeit false, narrative of a catastrophic medical evacuation.
Thermitus’s family, including her sister Betty and nephew Emayson Fraël, explicitly rejected the claims presented in the AI-generated content. Instead, they pointed to the real systemic failures that likely contributed to the tragedy, such as the lack of onboard medical personnel, the poor condition of emergency vehicles, and the broader inadequacies of the state-run health care system in the Northwest region. By framing the incident as a dramatic, singular failure of road conditions, the AI image obscured the deeper, structural questions regarding the lack of logistical resources and reliable emergency transportation available to rural residents.
