On July 2, 2026, President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated video to the social media platform X, featuring synthetic likenesses of several celebrity critics. The video portrays Trump as a doctor providing a treatment plan for what he terms "Trump Derangement Syndrome" (TDS), a phrase used to describe individuals he views as irrationally opposed to his presidency.

What happened

The AI-generated skit features the likenesses of Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell, John Leguizamo, and Edward Norton. In the video, an AI-generated version of Trump claims to be treating these individuals for TDS, which he characterizes as a "relentless" condition. The video cuts between the AI-generated celebrity figures, who provide scripted testimonials regarding their "recovery" after following a "treatment plan" that includes turning off news and drinking Diet Coke.

The content utilizes voice and facial synthesis to mimic the appearance and speech of the named celebrities. Experts highlighted by USA Today, including AI and deepfake expert Henry Ajder and social media consultant Matt Navarra, warned that while such videos may not always be intended as malicious, the increasing volume of synthetic media can pollute the information space and distort cultural memory. Navarra noted that younger audiences, who may encounter authentic archive footage alongside fabricated content in the same social media feeds, could face difficulty distinguishing between the two over time, potentially muddying the visual record.
