A viral social media post falsely claimed that Nigerian politician Peter Obi suffered a broken neck while attempting to replicate a cycling exercise performed by President Bola Tinubu. The claim was supported by a synthetic image depicting Obi in a hospital bed wearing a neck brace.
What happened
The misinformation campaign utilized a combination of AI-generated imagery and misleading video content to manufacture a false narrative. An X user shared a post featuring a short video of President Tinubu on a stationary bicycle alongside a photograph of Peter Obi in a hospital setting. The accompanying caption alleged that Obi had been hospitalized due to a neck injury sustained while trying to imitate the president's exercise routine.
To verify the authenticity of the hospital photograph, investigators subjected the image to analysis using three distinct AI-detection tools: ZeroGPT, Is It AI, and Hive Moderation. All three platforms independently classified the image as AI-generated, with ZeroGPT assigning a 99 percent probability of synthetic origin.
Beyond the technical analysis, there was no credible evidence to support the claim of an injury. Idris Zekeri, a spokesman for Obi, officially dismissed the reports as fabricated, stating there was zero truth to the rumors. Zekeri confirmed that he had been with Obi on November 1, 2026, shortly before the politician departed for an international engagement, and emphasized that Obi was in good health. The incident highlights the use of synthetic media to create deceptive political narratives intended to mislead the public.
